This method consists in measuring the global biochemical state of the preservative doped solution of the isolated human red blood cells using Raman spectroscopy with appropriate chemometric analysis of selected marker bands. Currently, only a macroscopic assessment of the level of haemolysis of red blood cells on the basis of a smear is performed prior to transfusion. There is no test to assess the quality of non-haemolyzed red blood cells which  quality can be too low. Thanks to the developed method, it is possible to analyse the quality of RBC. This minimizes post-transfusion complications, which is especially important for patients with a compromised immune system.

Keywords: red blood cell concentrate, erythrocyte storage, Raman spectroscopy, transfusion, red blood cell quality
